456g Hedgehog

Post  Hedgehoglover on Sat Nov 01, 2008 12:17 pm

Hi all.
Just picked up a male Hedgehog an hour ago! Weighs 456g, covered in Ticks and has pussy spines. I'm going to take it to the Vet in the morning, but right now I'm trying to get those monster Ticks out! Rolling Eyes There is about 20 in amonst the spines, and I swear I just saw fleas crawling through the spines.
Any help and advice or questions, just reply.
I hope he survives.

If there are ticks you can just about get to but not enough to remove, put a drop of oil (olive, vegetable, sunflower etc) on the tick.

As for fleas - horrible things but I am always so glad they like nothing other than hedgehogs!

Has he eaten or drunk anything yet?

Good luck with him! Grin

Thank you Trish for a quick reply.

To get rid of the Ticks use 'Johnsons Anti Rid mite' for caged birds. Dust lightly onto the Hedgehog.
You can also use tweezers but do not pull! Grip the tick with them and turn Anti Clockwise, the Tick should then drop off.
And as Trish said, if you can't get some of them off, use oil etc.
Someone of the Hedgehog Forum suggested putting double sided sticky tape inside the box or hutch, so that any ticks that drop off will stick to it (they can climb)!
Then get a brick and squash any remaining ticks! silent
Change the bedding daily so that any ticks or fleas come out.

Good luck!

Bethany.

Good advice.
I hope the Hedgehog makes a full recovery. Smile
