Small patient arrived.

Post  Trish on Tue Apr 21, 2009 3:12 pm

We had been out for an hour or so this evening, on our return there were numerous children waiting for me, with a box shouting "we've got a hedgehog!!"
The first thing I did was tell them to stop shouting or the poor thing would have heart failure!
They told me they had seen it in a dogs mouth.
I opened the the box and there was a small hedgehog, not curled, not moving but alive.
I took it and promised to let them know tomorrow how it is.
Initial examination shows no visable injuries, there is a little blood on the spines but I think these are from the dog.
It is small, and looks underweight - weighs 307g.
I have put it in Box 1, with some food with multi vitamins and a dish of rehydration fluid.
Little more can be done at the moment, the best thing for this little one is a dark, quiet, safe place to get over the shock and we will see what tomorrow brings.

It's a girl, and isn't looking good. I am hopefully getting her to my vet tomorrow. She is unsteady on her feet, and has a sort of spaced out look.
I'm wondering if there is concussion or something going on, or if there was somehting wrong before the dog got to her.
She has lost just over 20g since I got her yesterday, eaten very little.

Fingers are crossed.

I took her to the vet this afternoon.

She is in severe shock, has been given 10ml fluids (8ml NaCL & 2ml Duphalyte) by injection and 0.02ml anti-inflammatory by injection. I am to give oral fluids, and keep her warm.

So I can give fluids through the day I am taking her to work tomorrow.
luck

After lots of thinking, I have settled on a name - her name means 'strength, gentle' which I feel with her, her name is......Mildred!

A bit earlier I offered a 10ml syringe of 'glop' - majority of it taken with eagerness!! Thumbs Up
